Hemodilution and iron metabolism in rats during pregnancy.

چکیده
Studies were made on the cellular components of the blood, the serum iron concentration, and the circulating blood and plasma volumes of rats in pregnancy and on the iron transport from the maternal blood to the conception products (uterus and its contents) using radioactive iron. Anemia of pregnancy developed and was most pronounced during late pregnancy when the conception products developed rapidly. The reticulocyte count did not increase significantly, so that there is no evidence for stimulation of hematopoiesis during pregnancy of rats. The circulating blood and plasma volumes increased significantly during late pregnancy, but the total hemoglobin and red cell volume did not increase. The anemia in pregnancy of rats was due to hemodilution, but this hemodilution occurred in different grades in comparison with human pregnancy. The iron concentration of the serum decreased most during late pregnancy when development of the conception products was greatest and placental transport of iron to the fetus was largest.

The effects of iron deficiency on estradiol-induced suppression of erythropoietin induction in rats: implications of pregnancy-related anemia.
Pregnant women often develop anemia concomitant with the increase in serum erythropoietin levels, which are actually lower than those of nonpregnant anemic women due to the possible suppressive effect of endogenous estradiol on erythropoietin induction. The anemia, derived from hemodilution, does not act as a drive for erythropoietin induction, but iron deficiency, often observed during pregnan...
متن کاملTHE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ALUMINIUM TOXICITY AND IRON METABOLISM IN RATS
The relationship between aluminium toxicity and iron metabolism was studied. Male rats were exposed to aluminium by daily intraperitoneal injection of 40pmolelkg body weight. After 45 days, aluminium intoxified rats had a significant loweredserum ferritin (55%), iron (42%), TIBC (25%) and hemoglobin(31%). At thesame time the serum ceruloplasmin level was elevated by 60%. This result shows t...
متن کاملEffect of maternal variable stress on oxidative status and glucose metabolism in pubertal male rats
Introduction: Metabolic disorders are affected by negative stress experiences in the early stages of life. Accordingly, in this study, the effects of stress during pregnancy on oxidative status and glucose homeostasis in pubertal male Wistar rats were investigated. Materials and Methods: After pregnancy, female rats (200±30 g) were divided into 2 groups (6 rats per group) of stress and non-stre...
متن کاملThe effect of maternal hypothyroidism during pregnancy on carbohydrate metabolism in adulthood in rats
Introduction: Many of the diseases of adulthood are originated from the intrauterine conditions during fetal life. Because of the importance of thyroid hormones in growth and development of the fetus, the effects of maternal hypothyroidism on carbohydrate metabolism in adulthood was investigated. Methods: Pregnant rats were divided into the fetal hypothyroidism (FH) and the control (C) group...
متن کاملEffect of Prenatal Stress and Serotonin Depletion on Postnatal Serotonin Metabolism in Wistar Rats
Prenatal stress in rats results in structural, physiological and behavioral alterations that persist in adulthood. Serotonin (5-HT) is an important neurotransmitter known to be involved in these prenatal stress-induced behavioral alterations. The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of interrupted synthesis of 5-HT and immobilization stress during different gestational period on brai...
